Belle Vue Speedway is delighted to confirm the addition of World No.7 and former Aces No.1 Matej Zagar to the club’s 90th Anniversary Celebration for the Peter Craven Memorial, on Saturday, March 24.
The Slovenian international starred for the Mancunian outfit between 2013-2016 and has spent the last two seasons away from UK racing to focus on his pursuit of the world championship crown.
His form in the Grand Prix surged in the latter stages of the 2017 series as he fought to retain his top eight ranking and sealed his return to the world championships this year in Melbourne.
He will doubtless form the backbone of Slovenia’s Speedway of Nations efforts in Race Off 1 on June 2 at Teterow’s Bergring Arena, Germany, where he is the current track-record holder.
He recently expressed an interest in returning to British racing, and has always maintained Belle Vue would be his first choice should such an opportunity arise for him to return to Manchester. He said:
“I’m looking forward to riding at the National Speedway Stadium again. I love it at Belle Vue. It’s a club I feel strongly connected to and I’m happy to have the chance to ride there again.
I have some pretty amazing memories from my four years with the Aces and when I heard about the meeting for the 90th anniversary I knew I wanted to feature in the starting line-up.
When I raced in the Peter Craven Memorial meeting last year, I had a good night but it would be nice to aim a little higher than third. It’s a competitive field and I’m a competitive guy, but more than anything I hope it’s a huge success for the club.”
Tickets for the Belle Vue 90th Anniversary are now on-sale via the club’s website, bellevueacces.co. The evening, which will feature many other motorcycling disciplines, gets underway at the earlier time of 6pm.
