Devils In The Detail

The Belle Vue ‘Cool Running’ Colts stormed to a 55-35 victory over Plymouth at the National Speedway Stadium, picking up three big points and going back to the top of the NL league table.

The Devils gave as good as they got in this fiercely-contested National League clash, with the final scores failing to hint at the solidity and consistency of the challenge they brought to Manchester.

In fact, the visitors were ahead after the opening two heats thanks to an early advantage provided by their vastly experienced No.1 Adam Roynon, but it was an advantage they could not defend.

True to their reputation, the reigning league champions responded beautifully under pressure to turn the tables in their favour just two races later; by which time they had taken a 6-point lead.

It was a lead they would not only maintain, but would expand to 20 points at the conclusion of Heat 15 and captain Jack Smith could not have been more impressed with his team’s response.

He said: “The loss at Eastbourne was tough on the lads and we really wanted to come back strong against Plymouth, and the performance of everyone tonight was just what we wanted.

“It’s a huge boost after a difficult weekend and to be honest, we weren’t as comfortable as we could’ve been early doors particularly with Adam Roynon in such fine form for the visitors.

“Losing Paul after such an unassuming crash was a huge blow. He dislocated his thumb, which was popped back in, and we’re hoping nothing is broken and that he’ll be ok for the next one.

“But even after that, the boys responded as you’d expect. The reserves did an amazing job, everybody pitched in and that reflected in the final result. We couldn’t be happier with that.”

The Cool Running Colts continue their title defence at Stoke on Saturday, May 5 before the Rentruck Aces return home on Monday, May 7 to defend their KOC title against Wolverhampton.

Tickets for the Premiership home fixture, which commences at the earlier time of 12pm, are available online at and at the stadium box office on race day.
