The Rocket Man Reigns!

The track record of the National Speedway Stadium is now firmly in the hands of a Belle Vue rider after Dan Bewley smashed the previous set three years ago on a poignant Bank Holiday Monday.

August 26 marked precisely one year to the day since the 20-year old suffered a shattered femur, amongst other injuries, in one of the worst crashes in recent memory while riding for Workington.

The outgoing record of 58.2 was set during the 2016 Speedway World Cup by Niels-Kristian Iversen, and has stood firm for over three years before finally being bested by Bewley in league competition.

It was a must-win meeting against the King’s Lynn Stars and the rider has discussed the possibility of the record being challenged prior to the meeting, as Dan said: “We did have a bit of a joke about it!

“We talked about it on the track walk because there was a lot more dirt than usual. I honestly didn’t think that record would ever be broken, and it’s not something we purposefully set out to do!

“When they told me I’d broken the track record I felt really good. Monday was exactly one year ago to the day since I crashed at Workington, so this was a really good way to tick off that one year.

“Things have come full circle for me now and to get the win over King’s Lynn I think boosted everyone’s confidence before we go to Peterborough. But that’s somewhere I’m due a good night!

“We’ll take every point we can get and at this stage they’re essential. We finished strongly against King’s Lynn so that was definitely a move in the right direction. We’re not ready to call it a day yet.”

The Rentruck Aces have one final visit to Peterborough on September 5 for their final league fixture before the play offs, and they’re targeting nothing less than a repeat of their previous successes.

They then round off the 2019 Premiership Supporters’ Cup against Swindon in Manchester on September 12, where the winner on aggregate will walk away with the hard-earned silverware.
